Post Malone x Nirvana Tribute

Normally singer-songwriter, rapper, producer and actor Post Malone wouldn't be in my musical radar, but he recently hosted a live concert in tribute to Nirvana. I knew Post Malone had previously played in various metal/rock bands, so my interest was slightly piqued at him tackling one of my favourite bands during high school. The final bit information that finally go me to click on the link and watch the video - Travis Barker of Blink-182 would be filling in as the drummer...

I never really disliked Post Malone, it was more indifference, but after watching the above video I am definitely a fan. I'm not yet sure if that fandom extends to his regular musical output. I'll have to spend an afternoon or two giving his albums a proper listen before I can make that decision.

2Cellos play AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' like you've never imagined

This video of Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser (2Cellos) covering the classic AC/DC anthem, Thunderstruck, has caused quite the stir on the internet.

For more 'ba-rock' inspired covers, check out the duo's YouTube page. You'll come across several excellent covers including an excellent rendition of Nirvana's 'Smells like teen spirit,' and another AC/DC cover featuring Steve Vai.

Dave Grohl produces new Ghost cover EP

Ghost (a.k.a. Ghost B.C.) teamed up with Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) to record an EP of covers by artists such as Depeche Mode, ABBA, and Roky Erickson. The EP takes its name from Erickson's single "If you have ghosts." In addition to recording and producing the first four tracks of the EP, Grohl also lends his superb drumming talents to the title track.

To promote the release of the EP, Ghost are also releasing a pretty sweet looking T-shirt bundled with either a CD or vinyl copy of the EP. Here's a look at the track listing:
1. If you have ghosts (Roky Erickson cover)
2. I am a marionette (ABBA cover)
3. Crucified (Army of Lovers cover)
4. Waiting for the night (Depeche Mode cover)
5. Secular haze (Live from the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

Listen to Seether's Veruca Salt cover

For those of you, who like me, are unable to watch the music video for Seether's new single, the track has now been uploaded to their Soundcloud page.

This is definitely a worthy rendition of the original Veruca Salt song. I'm still intrigued as to see what Seether did for the music video; I'm kind of hoping they did a re-enactment of the Veruca Salt video, but that concept probably wouldn't go down as well today as it did nearly twenty years ago. Either way, a good cover version that definitely makes this compilation quite appealing to add to my collection.

Seether covers Verucal Salt's 1994 hit

Seether recently announced a 'best of compilation,' which would include a few surprises and three new tracks. Today the first single, a re-recording the Veruca Salt song that inspired the Seether's name was released. Unfortunately the link to Seether's 'Seether' doesn't work in South Africa (which is pretty lame considering this is where it all started for them), so here's Veruca Salt's original from 1994.

-- Update 16 September 2013 --
Stream Seether's version here (should work everyone, unlike the original video link above).

'Untrust us' a cappella

Here's an a cappella version of Crystal Castles' song, Untrust us sung by the Capital Children's Choir.

These kids are really talented, and this is one of the best alternate versions, of one of my favourite Crystal Castles songs I've heard in a while.

The Joy Formidable cover Echo & the Bunnymen's 'Killing moon'

From The Joy Formidable's Facebook page:

"This is the first of a few impromptu covers we'll be sharing with you. We did this version of Killing Moon recently on tour. Check out the way we accidentally managed to hide Matt's face for the whole video, and how Ritzy almost had a Janet Jackson moment! Enjoy."

Pigeon performing Daft Punk medley

If you thought you were going to see a video of a bird performing a medley of hits by French electronica duo Daft Punk, you are sadly mistaken. Instead here is a video of five blokes from Australia, who call themselves Pigeon, performing a medley of hits by French electronica duo Daft Punk.

The medley contains renditions of One more time, Around the world, Da funk, Robot rock, Aerodynamic, and Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. If you like what you heard, the track is available below as a free download.

After hearing this I can safely say that while Daft Punk isn't one of my favourite acts, I do prefer the sound of their older material compared to the tracks I have heard off their latest offering, Random Access Memories. Also, check out some of Pigeon's original material here and here.

Parrot sings Drowning Pool's Bodies

Here's a video clip of a parrot singing Drowning Pool's Bodies (a.k.a. Let the bodies hit the floor).

Alright, back to getting on with your Monday.

Puscifer's take on Bohemian Rhapsody

Puscifer's version of Bohemian rhapsody, originally released by Queen in 1975, may not be the first recorded cover of the song, but it is certainly my favourite.

In a typical tongue-in-cheek manner, Puscifer have also paid tribute to the original music video. The low budget green screen effects, and make up are quite comical.

J.Viewz & his musical fruit

J.viewz' folks obviously never scorned him for playing with food, or not eating his vegetables. Probably just as well though. If you thought that making music with sounds recorded from slamming car doors was amazing, then your mind will blown after watching J.Viewz' version of Massive Attack's Teardrop, recorded using various fruit and vegetables.

If you enjoyed what you heard/ saw, then you should definitely head over to J.Viewz' Soundcloud page and listen to some of his original tracks. Many of these tracks, including 8 off of Rivers and Homes, can be downloaded as mp3s for free.

Stream Puscifer's "Donkey Punch the Night EP"

You can listen to Puscifer's Donkey Punch the Night EP in its entirety over at Spin Magazine.

My favourite tracks are Puscifer's cover of Queen's classic, Bohemian rhapsody, and Drumcell's reinterpretation of the track Breathe. The band's front man  Maynard James Keenan, explained in an interview with Spin Magazine that Dear brother, the only other original track on the EP, was dedicated to several peers who recently passed away including Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, and Australian winemaker, Ray Beckworth.
