X-Men: Days of Future Past - Official trailer

I hope this film is going to be as good as the trailer suggests. I recently watched X-Men: First Class, and really enjoyed it, apart from a rather lame looking Beast. This instalment of the X-Men story looks to sort that out, while introducing a few new mutants, and re-acquainting us with a few old, familiar favourites.

I ordered Call of Duty: Ghosts

I finally gave in and ordered the Call of Duty: Ghosts (Hardened Edition). I realised that I had a gift voucher from one of the retailers offering pre-orders, for a similar value as the difference in price between the regular edition, and the Hardened Edition. So I'm getting a CoD: Ghosts collector's edition, but only paying the price of the regular edition. Score!
Contents of the Hardened Edition

While there aren't a lot of physical goodies in the Hardened Edition, it does include quite a few digital items, including a season pass. Hopefully having a season pass to CoD: Ghosts, will help motivate me to fianlly getting around to connecting my PS3 to the internet. Then I'll not only be able download all the extra stuff (not just for CoD: Ghosts, but for several others titles too), but also play CoD: Ghosts online, as that seems to be where all the fun is to be had.

I haven't played any of the other CoD titles, so this will be my first experience with the series. I wont lie, I'm really looking forward to playing the underdogs in the single player campaign, as well as seeing what all the fuss is about the franchise. I'd also like to see if all the smack-talk from the Battlefield fan-boys is really warranted, although I haven't played Battlefield yet either. If I like enjoy playing CoD: Ghosts, then I reckon it was money well spent, and the Battlefield guys are wrong, if I don't enjoy the game, then I'll know to stay away from both franchises and rather stick to Borderlands for my first person shooter fix

Lastly, in case you are still unsure of whether to pre-order the game, here's single player campaign trailer. And watch those 'south of the equator' comments, I'm from south of the equator...

The vampyre of time and memory

Queens of the Stone Age will be releasing an interactive video for their next single, 'The vampyre of time and memory,' at the end of the month. Here's the teaser trailer which features Josh Homme, a lot of stuffed animals, and a woman in a French maid's outfit. It looks as though the final video could be rather interesting.

Will you survive the Extinction?

I happened to be looking at pre-order offers for Call of Duty: Ghosts when I came across an Instagram video from the CoD development team. On the right is the image from the video that caught my attention.

My initial thought was that this 'ghost mask' looked a lot like a chimera from the Resistance series. Turns out that there has been a much rumoured 'Extinction mode,' which as a result of the video, updated profile pictures on Facebook, and an album of screen shots (WARNING: here be potential spoilers!), now seems to be confirmed.

Extinction looks to be Infinity Ward's answer to Treyarch's hugely popular 'Zombies' mode from the Black Ops story arc.

I was considering giving Ghosts a miss, but after this 'announcement,' and after re-watching the multiplayer videos, I may reconsider that decision.

Animated Kurt Cobain interview

Here's an incredible animation by Blank on Blank of an interview that took place between the late Kurt Cobain and Jon Savage back in 1993. After watching this I'm feeling kind of 'happysad,' as my buddy Siam would say.

Hundred Million's skull shaped sugar spoons

I was having a quick browse through Kickstarter, when I noticed these quirky skull shaped spoons designed by Hundred Million. I was really impressed to see that the project has already surpassed it's target, and with 26 more days to go. Even more impressive is that Hundred Million has only 155 followers on Facebook, yet there are currently 164 people backing the project. This means they've gotten more exposure through their Kickstarter campaign, than through Facebook!

I'm really tempted to order a pair of these (or perhaps even the mug and spoon set) but at £8 a spoon, they're really pricey, especially with the present exchange rates. Interestingly a set of six spoons costs £40, which equates to roughly £6.66 per spoon. Coincidence?

The special edition mug, which features a Mexican Day of the dead inspired design is downright rad. As is the catch phrase, 'dying for a coffee.' Sod it, I may just spoil myself with an early Christmas present, although I've already made the mistake of telling Em how much these are, so I may end up paying for these both literally and figuratively. Maybe I should get Em the wood pigeon cutting board...

What is your country best at?

Dog House Diaries compiled the following map of the world, showing which 'commodity' each country is the global leader of. Here's the list of sources if you want to see which countries save the most energy (Republic of Congo), or are the happiest (Costa Rica), or are the most corrupt (Turkmenistan).

This video is mind blowing

After seeing this video, I'd love to know what these statistics are for South Africa.

More incredible videos from the GTA V community

Okay, so If these gameplay, and time lapse videos from Grand Theft Auto V haven't persuaded you to buy the game yet, then perhaps this next collection of videos from Rockstar Games, along with these photos, taken from within the game will. Just look at the incredible attention to detail!

I know I'm definitely regretting my decision to cancel my order, even though I still have quite a few unplayed games in my collection.

Free download from Ghost

Last week I shared the first track off the forthcoming EP from Ghost, which was produced by Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters). In that post I mentioned that if you pre-ordered the EP you'd receive a free download of the live recording of Secular haze. Well it turns out that any one can download the track for free, simply by providing an email address. Best of all, this isn't in a lossy format like most free downloads...

Dead Beats and Sol Invicto remixes

Before releasing the last track to Initium II, Sol Invicto treated us to a remix of Saul Williams' Break. The track originally appeared on Williams' album The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust, which was produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.

Speaking of which, local production duo Dead Beats released a remix of Nine Inch Nails track, The hand that feeds this weekend too. It's been a while since I've listened to the original With Teeth version, but hearing this reminded me of how much I liked that song when it was released in 2005. Dead Beats have taken all the elements I liked from the original, and breathed new life into it. This is well worth a listen if you're a fan of Nine Inch Nails, and like hearing other artists interpretations of relatively well-known tracks.

If you enjoyed the remix then check out Dead Beats other offerings. They also have three EPs that can be downloaded for free. Two of these were released under the duos previous name, Sparrow.

Apologies to Sol Invicto

Halfway through writing the previous post I realised that I've been spelling the title of Sol Invicto's EPs Initium and Initium II incorrectly for almost a year. Bugger.

At least it's a pretty easy mistake to correct, and since no one corrected me, I'm assuming no one had even noticed.

Also, you can find where to download both EPs by clicking on the links above. The first track from Initium III will be released next weekend. Yes please!

Sol Invocto 'Initium II - 12.0'

Today saw the release of the final track making up Sol Invicto's second album, Initium II. The track follows on the naming convention for the Initium series, and is named 12.0. Unlike other tracks from Initium II however, this one features contributions from several members of the Sol Invicto fan base. As such, the full list of contributing artists quite long;

Sol Invocto featuring Kyle Sams, Jaakko Eskelinen, Chris Murphy, Sal Marsh, Maja Pasaric, Frankie Giustino, Soren Toft, Erik Bustos, Gussemburger Laurent, Dan Koetter, Logan, Endira F J, LC Chantre, Jorge, Nicholas Melton, Nicole G, Natalie McGeehan, Clinton Stonich, Tyrian Purple, David Yu, Gibson J, Lauren Bradley, Miles Kalbach, Darla Tempel, Alex Boswell, Jake Hoffman, NdSansbury, Chuy Naj, Haff, Appacasiapeyus, Steve Joliffe, Gianluca Grippa.

As well as having one hell of a list of contributors, 12.0 clocks in at over 10 minutes, making it the longest track on the EP. The resulting track sounds absolutely astounding, which is a testament not only to the artistic skills on the Sol Invicto members, but also to all the fans who contributed something to the project. Well done to all parties involved.

Bloc Party - Obscene (Kele Okereke remix)

Kele Okereke (Bloc Party) is poised to a release a compilation album that will feature a remixed version of Bloc Party's track Obscene. The remix departs from the familiar Bloc Party sound, Okereke makes the track work incredibly. The bouncy beat makes this an immediate club banger for the UK clubbing scene.

Okereke's Obscene remix will be available exclusively on the Bloc Party Tapes compilation, which will also feature tracks by artist who have influenced both the direction of Okereke, and Bloc Party's sonic exploration.

The list of contributors is quite extensive, and the number of musical genres their skills encompass is inspiring. this adds further insight into just how complicated the sound of Bloc Party has become as the band has assimilated all these sounds and ideas, and formed something new from it all.

While admittedly not for all Bloc Party fans, this is a great way to be get a feel for the type of music the band, and more particularly Kele Okereke, listen to for pleasure and when looking for inspiration. If this sounds appealing, then take a listen to this 20 minute preview, or go have a look at the full track list for Bloc Party Tapes.

Dave Grohl produces new Ghost cover EP

Ghost (a.k.a. Ghost B.C.) teamed up with Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) to record an EP of covers by artists such as Depeche Mode, ABBA, and Roky Erickson. The EP takes its name from Erickson's single "If you have ghosts." In addition to recording and producing the first four tracks of the EP, Grohl also lends his superb drumming talents to the title track.

To promote the release of the EP, Ghost are also releasing a pretty sweet looking T-shirt bundled with either a CD or vinyl copy of the EP. Here's a look at the track listing:
1. If you have ghosts (Roky Erickson cover)
2. I am a marionette (ABBA cover)
3. Crucified (Army of Lovers cover)
4. Waiting for the night (Depeche Mode cover)
5. Secular haze (Live from the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

October brain teaser solution

Last week I posted the following brain teaser:

Here is the solution, showing all workings

Coffee, axes and trousers

Here's an Idees vol Vrees comic from a month or so ago. It's in Afrikaans, and it's about coffee. I thought it was pretty funny when I first came across it, but now I feel it's more appropriate to share, mostly because of this

Direct translations for those of you who don't understand Afrikaans:
Blue Jacket: Ek drink koffie [I'm drinking coffee]
Grey Jacket: Ek kap 'n chino [I'm chopping a chino]

Admittedly, the direct translation probably still isn't funny, but 'kap 'n chino,' would sound very similar to cappuccino when spoken. If its' still not funny, then there's not much more I can do except apologise for sharing a comic which isn't funny if you don't understand Afrikaans.

††† - The epilogue

Finally, after waiting a month since the last teaser video from †††, we have been given the opportunity to listen to the first complete track off the band's third release. The epilogue is possibly the best track to come from the project so far.

††† have also posted the date 11/12/13 on their Facebook account, suggesting the release date for the third EP, as well as a grainy Instagram picture (right) with the caption 'es,' confirming that the EP will be released on a physical format.

I hope this will be released on CD too, as that is my preferred format, although I'll probably order the vinyl anyway if it isn't.

Let's see how smart you lot are

I came across the following brain teaser posted on Facebook. Do you think you know the correct answer?
Instead of commenting below, why not select your answer from the poll to the right (and no cheating!). There is only one correct answer. I'll share the full solution after the poll has closed on 10 October.

Time lapse video from within the GTA V world

This incredible video was captured entirely inside the virtual world of Grand Theft Auto V. The developers behind GTA V have really pushed the limits of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, to produce what could be the best game on both consoles in quite some time. No wonder the PC gamers of the world are feeling so neglected.

I'm also starting to regret my decision to cancel my pre-order, although I do still have the entire Resistance Trilogy, and Diablo III to play, as well as few more achievements in various other games to unlock. There is no doubt though, that when the time is right, I'll get myself a copy of GTA V.

More on the story over at PetaPixel.

Time to play a little catch up

I spent the last week attending a conference in North West Province, which resulted in me not posting here at all, despite quite a bit having taken place. So here is a round up of all the downloads, videos, and other stuff that has taken place in the last week or so.

Music

Gaming
Grand Theft Auto V - various game play videos
Heavy Rain - I started playing it

Other Stuff
Nespresso - We bought a coffee machine

More to come!

We bought a coffee machine!

After beer, rum, brandy, and tea, coffee is my favourite beverage to consume in large quantities. Especially during the morning, when drinking the first three in public is generally frowned upon. The only reason I prefer tea over coffee, is that I don't like instant coffee, and up until now that was the only way I could drink it in the comfort of my own home, so I often didn't.

That was until last weekend, when we spoilt ourselves and bought a Nespresso coffee machine. We chose the basic U machine and Aeroccino bundle, as it was on sale, and because it offers three different lengths or cup sizes; ristretto, espresso and lungo. We'd also used a machine like this on our last trip to Cape Town, and had enjoyed the relative ease of producing a delicious coffee each morning.

Unfortunately our first machine leaked, so this weekend we ended up taking it back and replacing it for another, non-leaking machine. While we were waiting for the staff to test our returned machine, and sort out the paperwork so we could get another one, we were approached by the Dolce Gusto sales rep.

Sadly upon arriving home, and un-boxing the machine, we discovered that it had several deep scratches on it. We promptly repacked it, and took it back to the retailer in order to exchange it. Fortunately the manager was willing to exchange the machine, and we insisted on opening the replacement while still at the store to make sure everything was in order. It was, and we went home with our third machine.

After setting up the Nespresso machine, and getting it ready to brew our first cup of coffee, we discovered that the set of 16 sample capsules bore the expiry date of 30 September 2013, only two days later! Clearly the new machine we received was older stock, as the sample pack contained a Finezzo Lungo capsule, the flavour that was phased out early this year.

While bleak about the eminent expiry of our coffees, even though the expiry date is merely a guide line, we were quite excited at the prospect of being able to taste the discontinued flavour. I made a cup of coffee with the coveted yellow capsule, and took a sip. It was rather disappointing, in fact it lacked flavour, and was quite insipid for an espresso. Em didn't like it much either, which is saying something since she tends to like the lower end of the intensity range. I had initial wondered if some of the flavours had escaped this particular capsule due to its age. After brewing another cup of coffee from the batch of sample capsules, we discovered that that could not be the case, as the fresh coffee had all the familiar flavours of the coffee we'd been enjoyinh in Cape Town. So in hind sight, there must have been a reason the Finezzo Lungo was discontinued in the first place, and it's probably to do with it's lack of flavour, and potentially it's popularity too.

Free download from Polyfuse

Polyfuse is a one man music project from Chicago. Last week he made his 2005 album, The Persistent | The Unobtainable available as a 'free' download. I say free, as it's a 'name your price' album, so although you can donate

Most of his other albums are also available as 'name your price' downloads, and if you like what you hear I highly suggest sending some credits his direction, as a way to say thanks for sharing his awesome sounds with everyone on the internet.

Playing in an interactive drama

I started playing Heavy Rain this weekend. I've gotten as far as switching characters for the first time, which isn't terribly far. I decided to give it a go since I was tired of collecting rotting zombie brains in Borderlands: The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, and still haven't gotten round to completing Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. I also needed a break from the frenzied button mashing of Mortal Kombat, even though I'm really enjoying the game.

I'd initially given Heavy Rain a go a few months ago after I first bought it, but couldn't make out any of the character's 'thoughts,' due to the low resolution of the TV I was playing on. As a result I found fumbling around quite tedious, and shelved it in favour of God of War II.

Heavy Rain has an interesting concept, whereby it plays more like a movie than a traditional video game. Various elements in the characters surrounding environment are interactive, such as light switches and bowls of fruit. So far I the storyline hasn't really grabbed me, but I am still in quite an early stage of the game.

So far my only real opinion I have of the game is that the controls are a little clumsy at times, as R2 has to be held along with the left analogue control in order to move the character around, and that Jason was an idiot that got what was coming to him.

Depending on what's happening this weekend, I'll try make some progress in the story, and if I get bored of Heavy Rain's dramatic setting, I'll play a few some button-mashing bouts of Mortal Kombat.

First music video from Palms

Palms have released the first music video from their self-titled LP. Future warrior is the opening track on the record, and has also been hailed by some as the best track from the group so far.

This video has it all; dreamy time-lapses of clouds, a tattooed hottie swimming, and a voyeur...

After watching the video, you can decide for yourself if Future warrior is indeed Palms best track, by streaming the entire record via SoundCloud below.

Deftones' Romantic dreams video

Deftones second video off Koi No Yokan is for Romantic dreams. The video features professional skateboarder Jason Park, skating some of Los Angeles' more iconic spots.

While I don't like the video that much, the song is still an absolute winner.

GTA V week 1 round up, after 2 weeks

Rockstar Games posted a collection of videos a week after the release of Grand Theft Auto V. I've finally gotten the chance to share it with you now, on the chance that you haven't already come across it on your own.

By the far the funniest GTA V compilation I've seen so far, is this compilation of in game fails. Enjoy.

Download three new tracks from Sol Invicto

A few days after releasing 8.0, Sol Invicto treated us to the next track from Initium II, with a download of 9.0.

Then a week on , Londrez skipped a few tracks and released the final version of 13.0 (should this not perhaps be labelled 13.1?). The demo version of this track was released late last year.

Without missing a beat, the track 10.0 was released the following day.

Now we all just have to wait patiently till Sunday, when the next track will be released.
