Dead Space for free from Origin

Yes you read that correctly, EA is offering the sci-fi, survival-horror, Dead Space as a free download for PC via their Origin platform. This deal is available until 8 May 2014, so there is plenty of time for you to download the 7.5GB file.

I don't know too much about the game, and it hadn't really been on my radar of games to play, but after reading the Wikipedia article, and a few Metacritic reviews, not the most reliable sources I know, but it looks like a worthwhile game to add to any collection. Especially since it's free!

It'll still be some time before I get round to downloading it for myself, but in the meantime some of you might be able to give it a bash, and let me know what you think of it.

This makes me feel old

If you were born in the '80s, watching this Teens React video is a sure way to make yourself feel a tad bit older. At least the kids of today are slowly realising that most modern pop music is rubbish, and that the 'artists' motives tend to revolve around fame and fortune, as opposed to artistry.

If Nirvana is considered old, what do we label the bands my folks listened too while they were growing up?

More games I'm looking forward too

Perhaps I was too quick to jump to the conclusion that Evolve and Dying Light were the only two titles coming to next gen. consoles that I was anticipating the release of. After reading a few of those "most anticipated game releases for 2014" type articles, I've had to expand the list:

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Alien: Isolation are also quite appealing new titles. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor has an excellent gameplay video, and looks to incorporate stealth elements similar to those seen in the Assassin's Creed franchise. The Nemesis System allows for enemies to remember previous encounters with Talion, the in-game hero, which looks and sounds intriguing. The ability to use wraith-like abilities should add another interesting spin on how mission objectives are completed.

Next up, there's...

This looks like a step in the right direction for games set in Ridley Scott's Alien universe. Opposed to being a first person shooter, like the poorly received Aliens: Colonial Marines, Alien: Isolation has being called a survival horror by developers, and instead of mowing down hordes of xenomorphs with big guns, the gameplay is orientated around sneaking passed a lone invincible alien, which will be hunting the player via sight, sound, and smell. Without weapons to use against the alien antagonist, the gaming experience should be pretty tense, and filled with encounters to make you jump out of your seat.

For me, this looks like the big-budget, console equivalent to Stasis. They may be different genres, but from a visual point of view, they are setting out to recreate very similar environments, and experiences. It will be interesting to see the efforts from both sides.

To get a better idea of the game  here's the trailer. Also worth watching is the 'Origins' video that features several interviews with developers.

Lastly, from the director of Resident Evil comes...

I don't have much to say about The Evil Within except; for maximum effect, watch the trailer on your own, in the dark, with the sound turned up.

Looks pretty awesome right? I still think I'll wait to see what kind of reviews it gets, as well as wait to see how the zombie survival horror, Dying Light does, before deciding which to play first.

So at the moment my list of most anticipated next gen console games for 2014 looks something along the lines of:
5. The Evil Within
4. Dying Light
3. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
2. Alien: Isolation
1. Evolve

But, wait! With the exception of Evolve, all these titles will be released for the PlayStation 3Xbox 360 and PC too, while Evolve will only get a PC version on top of the next gen. console versions. Again the versions of the game for the older consoles might not have the full functionality as those for next gen. consoles, but games games will be released for 'previous gen.' consoles.

Conclusion: there still isn't a next generation exclusive title attractive enough to make me change to a new console, and upgrading the PC still looks like a much better investment at this stage.

'To all pagan boys and girls,' free download, with love from Bong-Ra

If you enjoyed the free download of Bong-Ra's Annus Horribilus, then you may happy to know that he has made another EP available for free download for the course of the week. To all pagan boys and girls was originally released back in December of 2012, and has a more reggae influenced sound that a lot of Bong-Ra's more recent work. Those of you after the hard-hitting drum and bass of Annus Horribilus should start at track three of the EP, Killer empress.

This is another solid effort from Bong-Ra, and a great way to see how the sound of Bong-Ra has been moulded and formed over the years. Well worth a listen.

Sol Invicto - Turtle massacre

When I opened my email this morning there was a great treat waiting for me; a new track in Sol Invicto 'Tapes' series called Turtle massacre. The track is dark, and brooding, and you should just listen for yourself reading the accompanying story (after the jump) posted to Soundcloud and Facebook.

"This is the origin of the great battle & the birth of Seastep.
Nightfall, just the sounds of the ocean against the sandy shore, the giant turtle warlords lay silent, thousands of them, lining the beach, their dark grey armored, battle worn shells stretching out for miles. The sea was calm, yet something about that night, felt strange. The lower ranking warriors took it in turn to watch over the camp, proving their worth, paying their dues. They would attack at dawn, taking no prisoners, this was it, their enemy did not stand a chance.
Not long into the watch, one of the guards picked up on a light, far far out to sea, a red, an almost laser-like beam...they needed line of sight on this, now! Another guard was signaled, and they peered through the coral binoculars to get a better idea of what this was.
Staring right back at them, two hundred pairs of eyes, eyes red like fire, the fire of death, riding a ghost tsunami, headed straight for the camp!!
They had all but minutes, to wake the army and act before, the massacre descended upon them.
-Richie
I'm definitely liking the sound of 'seastep.'

New video from †††

††† are premièring the video for their track The epilogue, via various MTV websites. I've been having issues trying to watch the video myself, so let me know if you are having problems with the embedded player below. The epilogue is easily one of my favourites 'non-EP' tracks off of the recent album. Watch and enjoy.

New Chevelle track: Hunter eats hunter

Chevelle have released the second single, Hunter eats hunter, from La Gárgola via an audio only YouTube video. Hunter eats hunter is pretty heavy, and has certainly helped build my anticipation for hearing their next offering. Give it a listen for yourself, and see if you agree.

Also, the song title reminded me of this video from How to Destroy Angels.
