A release date for the DVD/ Blu-ray editions of Sonic Highways has been announced. Pre-orders for physical editions, as well as DRM-free downloads of the series are now available, with the release date set for 7 April.
Every time more details are released regarding the Sonic Highways album/ T.V. series I get even more excited about the project. From the trailer, the series looks as though it is going to be the best thing on T.V. since Game of Thrones finished a few months back. The audio sounds very promising too.
It would be great if Sonic Highways were to be performed in it's entirety during the Foo Fighters' South African tour. This could tricky though, given the number of additional contributors featured in the video, and on the album.
By the far the studio album I am most looking forward hearing this year is the eighth offering from the Foo Fighters. Even more exciting is the decision to record the album at various studios around the United States, document the recording process, and then turn it into the HBO TV series, Sonic Highways!
Unlike Sound City, Sonic Highways will share more of the stories of the musicians, and the music scenes that influenced them while living in cities renowned for their impact on global music trends. in Grohl's own words, "a love letter to the history of American music."
The series will run for eight episodes, with each episode centring around a new location. These are rumoured to be Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York,Seattle, and Washington D.C. Chicago, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles are high on my list of "places to go," and New York is at the top of my "places to go again" list, so those are the episodes I'm looking forward to. In all honesty though, I reckon the entire series will be worth watching, and I'll definitely be asking my (future) family in the States to get this for me on Blu-ray once it's been released.
I'm too lazy to write my own post tonight, so here's Consequence of Sound's take on the Foo Fighters' eighth studio album, set for release sometime during the Northern Hemisphere's autumn, and their post about Grohl's the HBO series.
Last nights Grammy Awards ceremony was meant to end with a bang, especially considering that the final performance for the evening included some of rocks greatest talent including Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age).
Instead of being treated to an absolute musical extravaganza, viewers at home got to watch a reasonably good live performance of the Nine Inch Nails' track 'Copy of a,' followed by a much better performance of the Queens of the Stone Age track 'My god is the sun.' Well, that was what everyone was anticipating, but because the ceremony was running late, the guys in charge decided it was time cut off Homme and the boys and let every one at home know where the Grammy Awards got there money from before rolling the final credits.
As a result Reznor had the following tweet for the people behind the Grammy Awards:
Music's biggest night... to be disrespected. A heartfelt FUCK YOU guys.
Subsequently all videos of the performance have been removed with the organisers claiming copyright infringements. This prompted Spencer Kaufman across at Loudwire to write an open letter to the producers of Grammy Awards. It's an interesting read and points out a lot more of underlying issues within the 'music industry.'
The 56th Annual Grammy Awards are taking place this Sunday night. I don't normally take much interest in awards ceremony, but this year might just be different. For starters it'll be the first time Gary Clark Jr, Nine Inch Nails, and Queens of the Stone Age perform at the event.
Clark is the first artist in history to be nominated in the categories 'Best Rock Song,' and 'Best Traditional R&B Performance' in the same year. I saw him perform live in June last year, and he would be a worthy recipient of either award, and probably deserves both.
What I'm really looking forward to seeing though, is the final performance of the evening by Trent Reznor/ Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age, who will also be joined on-stage by Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), and Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac). I'm interested to see if they will perform a track off of the Sound City soundtrack (since they were all involved in its creation), or if they perform a medley of tracks by the various groups. Either way, this looks to be an epic Grammy ceremony performance finale performance.
Ghost (a.k.a. Ghost B.C.) teamed up with Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) to record an EP of covers by artists such as Depeche Mode, ABBA, and Roky Erickson. The EP takes its name from Erickson's single "If you have ghosts." In addition to recording and producing the first four tracks of the EP, Grohl also lends his superb drumming talents to the title track.
To promote the release of the EP, Ghost are also releasing a pretty sweet looking T-shirt bundled with either a CD or vinyl copy of the EP. Here's a look at the track listing:
1. If you have ghosts (Roky Erickson cover)
2. I am a marionette (ABBA cover)
3. Crucified (Army of Lovers cover)
4. Waiting for the night (Depeche Mode cover)
5. Secular haze (Live from the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

The full soundtrack for Dave Grohl's rockumentary Sound Cityis can be streamed by clicking this link. So far I've only gotten as far as the track three, which features the unmistakable voice of Stevie Nicks, but I can already confidently say that this is my album of the year.
I can't wait to receive my copies of the Sound City DVD and CD.
Dave Grohl will be hosting an Ask me anything (AMA) session on Reddit on 8 February 2013. In the meantime, you can download Sound City for only US$ 10 by using the discount code provided on the following site.
This is another excellent opportunity to get a DRM-free download of Sound City at a reduced price. I'm going to continue to be patient and wait for the DVD release of the documentary. I'm a sucker for the physical product.
The soundtrack to Dave Grohl's rockumentary, Sound City, will contain 11 original tracks, featuring collaborations of many of the greatest artists in rock. The album is set for release on the 12 March 2013, and is available for pre-order from iTunes. Folks who pre-order the album will receive an instant download of the first single Cut me some slack, featuring Paul McCartney (The Beatles), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, Nirvana), Krist Novoselic (Nirvana) and Pat Smear (Foo Fighters, Nirvana).

At this point, I'm most excited to hear the last track, as it has contributions from three of the musicians of my 'dream team.'
It was confirmed today that Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) is to reunite with Queens of the Stone Age for the recording of the band's next studio album following the departure of drummer Joey Castillo. Coincidently, it was Castillo who replaced Grohl as the band's touring drummer during the European leg of the Songs for the Deaf tour in 2002.
This is not the only project that Grohl has previously collaborated with Queens of the Stone Age mastermind, Josh Homme, the two joined up in 2009, along with bassist John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) to form Them Crooked Vultures.
I'm really happy to see two of my favourite musicians recording together again. This photograph posted on the band's Facebook is by far their most exciting update from the band in the last few months, unless you're fortunate enough to be going to Download Festival in June 2013.
Directed by the god-like genius that is Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures), Sound City is a documentary about the legendary analogue recording facilities of the Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, CA.
To date the film's website has featured musical memories from prominent names in the music industry including those of Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Vinny Appice (Dio, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell), Rick Rubin (producer), Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails, How to Destroy Angels), Pat Smear (Germs, Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Lee Ving (Fear, MD.45), Lindsey Buckingham (solo, Fleetwood Mac), Butch Vig (Garbage), Ross Robinson (producer), Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stonesour), Tom Petty (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Traveling Wilburys), Alain Johannes (Eleven, Queens of the Stone Age), Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Eagles of Death Metal), Joe Barresi (producer), Rick Springfield (solo, Sahara Snow), Jim Keltner (session musician), Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac) and Rupert Neve (electronics engineer).
From additional photographs posted on the website, it looks as though many of the artists and producers involved in the project are collaborating in the recording of new material that may become the films soundtrack, or possibly be released as an accompanying album.
